Broken Neck

Earlier this year, a 17 year old boy came to me suffering low back pain and shoulder problems, which he sustained while playing rugby.  We were progressing well and he was no longer having any problems.  But he agreed to come on a weekly basis so he could be in the best possible condition during rugby season.

He missed an appointment, so I called to see how he was.  I came to find out that he was on the receiving end of a “spear tackle”, which involves being lifted vertically and driven head first into the ground – resulting in a broken neck.  So he underwent surgery whereby a bone was taken from his hip and fused to his neck.

I spoke with his parents and asked them to give it a month to take, and then to let me give him additional Bowen treatments.  When the boy came to see me, I assessed the range of movement in his neck.  He had no movement whatsoever.  He could not turn his neck at all.

Because his body had been severely traumatized, I just did a few of the Bowen moves on him the first two weeks.  Slowly he began to feel a little better.  By the 5th and 6th weeks, he was really progressing well.  He was now able to turn his head half way towards his shoulders.

Slowly I started adding a few more advanced Bowen moves.  The pain slowly began disappearing throughout his back and his neck movement was much improved.  He could now lay with his neck to the side for short periods of time.  A month later he had full neck mobility.

After four months of Bowen treatments, he is now walking around like any other normal person, and no one would even suspect the extent of his original injuries.
